Spark Book Two of the Sky Chasers Amy Kathleen Ryan Books

Well, I'm glad to say that Ryan did a good job with maintaining the tread of style she had going from her first book, Glow. Being how Spark was the sequel, it flowed well from one to the other. I was doubly surprised that the plot in Spark picked up right were the first left off. I cannot say, how upset and cheated I feel when a book ends on a cliffhanger only to have the sequel pickup some time after that cliffhanger. It's almost as if someone coped a feel without the courtesy of at least buying me a drink. Used! Used, I tell you is how I feel with those books!
As for the plot itself, Ryan picked up a few new twists and turns in Spark, which I really enjoyed and let me just say personally to Ryan, I never expected that stowaway twist at the end! Way to go!
(For those of you curious about that last comment, sorry. No spoilers here. Go read the books to see for yourself) Overall, I really enjoyed the plot in this second installment. It wasn't AS good as the first book but I can't really complain about that, seeing how it's hard for me to love sequels over the first. (Except for Vampire Academy! Mead had me hook, line and sinker for every single book in that series!) First books in a series are always special to me and therefor the best because that's when you are first introduced to the characters you come to know and love/know and hate.

How about those characters?
Like in the plot, Ryan did a good job with carrying over her characters. Everyone seemed to be in sync with their actions, mental and physical! I've read a few reviews that think otherwise, saying that male characters are abusive and mental. I say otherwise. Ryan wrote a book where horrible things happened. Her characters physical and mental personalities are a direct response to those situations. Cause and reaction if you will. They acted within reason, they reacted within reason and they grew as needed from the horrible environment they found themselves in. Plus, their kids! So, they are a right to a few mistakes. It's because of this that I like Ryan's book so much. Her characters have real depth. She shows the gritty just as much as the good and her characters are even aware of it, growing as people do in real life because of mistakes made. I can really relate that that, though not to the whole space scenario.

Hows the writing?
Just as good as before. Yes, no real change here. You can really tell that Ryan's hit her stride in both books. No major wordflow or descriptive change present.

What I didn't care for?
Well, honestly it was the ending. I feel books should end on real endings, not cliffhangers. Spark pretty much just took me for a wonderful tour of it's world then dropped me off the edge of a unexpected cliff. Perhaps it expected me to fly from the force of being in love with a well done book, but instead I feel hard on the fact that I have to wait for book three. Now, I'm bummed.

Overall
Spark is a pretty gift, wrapped in a pretty bow. It said all the right things, in all the right ways. Except it left me hanging. Which is why I'm grading this book a half star less than it's predecessor.

Spark Book Two of the Sky Chasers Amy Kathleen Ryan Books Reviews

...define awesome? Amy Kathleen Ryan.

Spark is sinister. From the plot to the main characters Kieran, Waverly and Seth, it was just so nerve-wracking sinister. And I looove it!

Kieran is still giving me the creeps. His sermons and utter belief that God is talking to him? It made him crazy dangerous. But I cannot hate him 100% because he really believes that he is a special one - the chosen among the hundred kids living in the Empyrean to deliver them from evil called Seth and Ann Mather. haha! so brilliant.

Waverly was the surprise. Whatever happened to her in the New Horizon, it changed her drastically. She's aloof, suspicious and already considered a recluse. The terrible emotional damage that Anne Mather did to her was very apparent in one of the brig scenes. Her excitement to conducting violence is so disturbing.. but it excited me, too! Surely, Waverly is not in for a fairy tale. But she's not going down without a fight. I regard her character with respect, blatant flows and all.

Seth... I'm still on his team. *beams* For a guy who realized his mistakes in the past, redemption seemed futile. And yet, he risked his life time and again to save whatever life is possible inside the Empyrean. He's so smart! Angry, hurting and brash, but still smart. ) Finally, finally something good happened to him. Woohoo! Can't wait to see you again in Flame. =P

I don't know what nebula Amy Kathleen Ryan got her diabolical ideas for her series, but I am so into it. Many readers might find this series malignant (with the dak theme), but I rejoice in it!

Spark is not your typical YA sci-fi, dystopian book. So you better pack up lots of sunshine with you if you intend to board the Empyrean or New Horizon.
I am sorry to say that I almost didn't make it through this one. It also pains me that so many people it seems loved this book. I found it slow and just pointless. I really didn't love Glow all that much but wanted to see if Spark could redeem it. And it just didn't for me. Spark picks up where Glow left off and it just doesn't pick up at all. As I am writing this I find it hard to review it. I finished this one and picked up Flame which is book three. And I am just so torn. This series had everything going for it. But, it just lost me along the way.

I think Spark really lost me when it came out that the ship Waverley piloted back home had, had a stowaway on it. It was just a conflict they really didn't need. You have Kieran still acting like Mathers and Seth who is just being stupid. Waverly can't stand up for herself (personally I think she had more balls when she had been kidnapped)

This one was a mash up of more religion and kids being stupid kids.
