The Citizen Soldier Series is one you will want to read over again and again, while you wait for book 2. The characters in In Heaven's Shadow that introduced were well written. You could connect with them, even if they were supposed to be bad. (Like Mkai.) The names were hard to pronounce, but that’s all good I’m always up for a challenge. The fight scenes were amazingly detailed as well, it was like a movie playing in your head as you read! You could see the characters fighting and sense the dread as something bad happened or the glowing happiness as they won. There were a lot of feels. There were some parts I had to put the book down and think sadly “Awh…” There were also parts that I would laugh and feel the excitement and worry of the characters. In Heaven’s Shadow shows a world the same but different from our own, opening eyes to how the world just may be. It kept me captivated and wanting more. Definitely caught me up in this series! This is one book you would stay up late to read just to see what happens and if the character you love dies. The concept of Archangels, Demons, Protectors, and God sending His son again to earth is a concept not found in too many books. It was amazing to read, I can’t wait for the second book in the series, which I heard that the author is working on now.Tags : In Heaven's Shadow: Book One: Citizen Soldier [Matthew Bryan] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I couldn't put this book down. Looking forward to the next installment. Very good first novel. Looking forward to following Matthew in what I'm sure will be a long career.
I devoured this book. I couldn't put it down. It starts out with punks getting the beating we all wish they would get and never slowed. The character development was more than enough to pull you in and make you feel connected with them. As the story develops you feel the pain and anguish as well as the joy the characters experience.
I cannot wait for the next books in the series. Matthew is definitely an up and coming new author that everyone should read.
An epic battle for Heaven is gearing up, and the hordes of Hell have a new Mistress...
As a fan of fantasy and sci-fi, I'm always willing to give any new stories a chance to winnow their way into my heart (and collection), but rarely do I find such a jewel from an author new to the public stage.
Matthew Bryan has done an excellent job weaving together our world and the next, presenting a rich story of love, sacrifice, light and dark...and the dark is indeed inky.
He takes us on a firsthand tour of the powerful and polarizing subject of Angels, Demons and salvation, and leaves room for everyone at the table. This tale will reach out with whispers...and have you enraptured by the end of the first chapter.
"In Heaven's Shadow" is exactly what fantasy fiction readers search for, and left me in desperate need for the next volume. I will be first in line for whatever he reveals to us next!

This is an urban fantasy fans of Supernatural might enjoy.
Hell has a new boss, and she's meaner and uglier than the original one. Hell's new ruler plans to storm Heaven using the souls of the damned as foot soldiers.
M'Kai, a demon who never really got into the job, decides to risk his life to stop her. He joins forces with a band of exiled angels designated to protect mankind. This novel is full of great fight scenes, scary monsters, and tough as nails warriors. It's a very exciting story.
M'Kai's bravery and selflessness are heartwarming and thought provoking. Aside from M'Kai, the novel is full of lovable characters. The world building is interesting and unique.
In Heaven's Shadow is first in a series, and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the story unfold.
In Heaven's Shadow was an amazing book! I thoroughly enjoyed the concept of an ancient order of angels who were not necessarily cast out of Heaven for choosing to protect Man, but they weren't allowed to go back either. Whether or not you believe in Heaven or Hell, this book will definitely make you pause and think about the supernatural forces that surround us all. Matthew's telling of the eternal struggles between the As'rai and demon-kind is an awesome modern day twist to a story that is older than our combined oral histories of our ancestors who were running around killing each other in the cradle of civilization.
The flow of the book does an outstanding job of keeping the reader begging for the next chapter as the As'rai, M'kai and Rie search for their charge in the city of Los Angeles. The characters are developed so well that you WANT to know more about them and are rooting for each of them, biting your fingernails during every fight scene in the hopes that they survive.
This was an outstanding effort by a first-time author and I can't wait to read the next installment in the Citizen Soldier series!
Hell's new ruler has a plan to over run Heaven using the souls of Man. She is very evil, ruthless and wil stop at nothing to finish her goals. She sends Demons to find God's son before the angels do. He is alive again and even he doesn't know who he is. As'hame may be an exiled angel but he watches over mankind to keep them safe. He has help from others but his main task is to find the son of God before the new ruler of Hell does. It is a race to find the mystery man and a battle all the way.
This book is a little different than others I have read. You have angels. fallen angels. demons, humans and so much more. It is a book packed full of battles and you really have to look deep inside to see that not everyone branded as evil is. I had figured out who the son of God was easy enough as there is plenty of signs. However that is just half the story. When faced with the truth he does take it pretty well and digs deep. For me one show stealer f the book is M'Kai. He is a demon which you figure would just make him a bad guy but he is not. He to me really has a great heart and shows lots of courage standing with the side of good. I will say it did start off a little confusing at first for me but once it took off I couldn't put it down. I had to see what would happen next. If you want an action packed book full of love, hope and even evil give this one a try.
