The hero is a recovering cocaine addict who had been a great writer early in his career but now is just a Has Been. The heroine is a down-on-her luck aspiring novelist whose outspokenness and attractiveness get her fired from every a variety of low-wage jobs. Finally she gets a lucky break reviewing the hero's latest play. Her review is unfavorable & upsets hero. Fate intervenes in the form of Lord Marlowe, a book and newspaper publisher and also the hero of the first Girl Bachelors novel, who decides to hire the heroine to help the hero finish the book he still owes the publishing company. They end up isolated together in the country, sparks fly, they inspire and challenge each other etc etc. The dialog is witty, the developing relationship rings true and everything works beautifully until the ending. The conflict of the relationship is based on the hero's cynicism and inability to recognize his feelings even while he seduces the heroine. Without giving away any more specifics, the problem is not the conflict but the resolution. I would guess that readers will want the hero to suffer a little more and see a little more humility and growth after the way he had treated the heroine, ie; taking her for granted. The pacing was far too quick and didn't seem true to the earlier characterization of either hero or heroine. It actually felt like the author had reached her minimum page limit and decided she was done. UGH.
It feels a little ironic writing an unfavorable review about this book. Much of the plot centers around the conflict between writers and critics--specifically critics that don't have the right credentials to review books. LLG has a lot of quotes about the difficulties of writing beginning each chapter. One quote in particular rang true (not only regarding LLG, but all genre authors who must be given insane deadlines): that a writer begins an artist and ends a prostitute.
That said, LLG's latest book is well worth the time and money. I have enjoyed everything LLG has written and I look forward more and more from her . . .

Not my favorite Guhrke book but I still liked it. I'll read anything she writes. I would recommend to my historical friends...
Great-Loved it.
Loverly written, such a nice and creative idea and the characters lovable. Guhrke is a great author, reading through the book wad so easy and wonderful, I loved it! (it even brought tears to my eyes))
This is probably one of the best romance novels I've read this year. I'd say that the reason for that is that the characters are well-developed. Both were likable; though one is endlessly optimistic and the other deeply cynical, their philosophical clashes propelled the story keeping the back and forth between characters sharp. The author explored the process of writing; revealing the trials, hardships, exhiliration and doubt that comes with it. Overall, the book was a great read.
I had not read this author in a while and was pleasantly surprised with the characters and story line. I enjoyed the series very much.
This was a unique kind of romance story. Sebastian (hero) and Daisy (heroine) were truly compatible characters. The story starts off kind of slow. However, towards the middle it picks up a bit. If you enjoy romance stories where the hero and heroine slowly builds a relationship and eventually fall in love, then this story is for you. I like the fact that there was not many characters involved in the story. The author maintained a lot of attention on the hero and heroine who were both very likable characters. The one thing I didn't like was there is only one sex scene in the entire story and that does not occur until almost the end of the book. LLG I love your work but a little more excitement wouldn't hurt. There were plenty of opportunities to make this a more sensual and exciting read.
I liked most of this book and found the premise entertaining.
The heroine tries to get the hero to help her become a better writer while helping him overcome his own writer`s block - and the demons he is fighting. I loved their interaction and how she doesn`t take "no" for an answer. The book made me lean back and enjoy the whole scenario and I was looking forward to seeing them continuing their banter and push-and-pull growing attraction for one another.
***** Spoler ******
Unfortunately the book ended fairly abruptly and I felt it would have been so much better if there had been an additional 50 pages explaining how and why the hero went from seeing the heroine as a great help to actually beginning to love her. We go from rejection to declarations of love without any kind of explanation and that left me a bit .... unsatisfied.
