This is one author that knows how to grab your attention pulling you in with a compelling read and hooking you with a wonderful plot with great characters. She pull on your emotions that you feel you have become part of the story. You just want to jump right into the pages giving a hug to this character or that.

My heart really broke for Christopher with a childhood like he had it is amazing he turned out as good as he did. His mother was in prison for prostitution and some other things, this is where his was born. Your heart really has to go out to her and the things she did to make sure he was feed and taken care of. He had to watch terrible things happen to her and then watch her die it really is a sad emotional read. When he became of age he left the prison he and his friends become men for hire as they took on the role of assassins. Life goes on with him taking a person life and getting paid he feels and shows no emotion until the day when he was hired to kill Millie. He tried he really did he even had his hands around her throat but there is a powerful attraction and he just can’t bring his self to do it. Things just are not adding up. He decides to help and protect her it will only cost her one night with him.

Millie doesn’t know what to think she is scared and alone but for her son. She doesn’t know who to trust and at what cost will it be. She is hiding secrets she will keep hidden at all cost knowing these could give him an idea of why there is a price on her head. She does agree to his terms of protection just like his mother there isn’t anything she wouldn’t do for her son, in doing so she comes to understand why he does what he does.

The author writes in a way that you have no trouble picturing the scenes in your mind as they unfold. I doubt you can read this without your emotions being pulled in as your heart breaks a little. From Christopher watching his mother die from abuse in prison to the abuse he went through all the way to being released not knowing what to do with his self. He has made money hand over fist but doesn’t have anything to spend it on. He is angry and who could blame him as he takes his anger out on the world. I enjoyed how the build up between these two you can feel the power of their chemistry. The struggle as he works out his feelings is very emotional for him and the reader. I had a few small issues with the story but nothing major and am rating it a 4.5 a rounding it up to a 5 star. The writing was compelling as was the story you have no trouble being pulled in from the start. The characters are great as you watch them grow and learn understanding they can have a good life and learning to believe in their selves giving back as much as they get. This was well worth the read and I look forward to reading more from this author.

This is book two in the The Victorian Rebels Series and I was so excited when I received an ARC from the author and publisher. When I had read about Christopher Ardent in The Highwayman, I thought that I am not going to like this hero, I mean how could you right? He is shown to be this cold, ruthless, and unprincipled killer with no feelings. My god, was I wrong. The past that makes Ardent into what he is today is so painful and heart wrenching that you can only imagine how a person can survive that and have a heart and a soul. But when Millie comes into his life by means of a killing contract, he is amazed at how difficult it is for him to kill her. Millie is London's newest and brightest shining star from the stage and her popularity has risen to great heights. There is a mystery serial killer on the loose killing mothers like Millie who have little boys and are then kidnapping all the little boys. The day when Christopher meets Millie to kill her begins their journey, a journey where the most brutal assasin ends up saving her life and she pulls him from darkness into the light.

This emotional and dark love story is so gripping that it captures you right from the first page. All the characters written by the author, especially Christopher and Millie are extremely complex and nuanced. You feel the pain, frustration and joy that they both feel as you read the story making this book even more fascinating. The sex scenes are hot and intense but tender and heartbreaking at the same time. I especially adore the scene where Christopher is making love to what he thinks is his "dream" Millie and opens up his heart for the very first time to her. I completely fell in love with Christopher by the end of book and I feel like he won this book for me. This author writes some amazing antiheroes, like Dorian in The Highwayman and now Christopher in this book. If you like antiheroes written by Lisa Kleypas and Elizabeth Hoyt, pick up this book for sure. You will not be disappointed. For myself, I cannot wait to read her next book, The Highlander!
